The Committee of Stokesley and District u3a consists of between six and twelve members, elected by the membership, usually at an Annual General Meeting. There are four Officers: Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. These are positions that have to be filled to allow the u3a to operate. Non-officer committee members take on a range of accountabilities depending on the needs of the team, and the interests of the individual.
With exception of Treasurer, any Committee Member may serve for a maximum period of three years as a Non-Officer and three years as an Officer after which they must take at least a one year break. The Treasurer may serve a three-year term of office and may stand for re-election to serve a further three-year term to give a maximum continuous term of six years in the office of Treasurer That person may serve up to three years as a Non-Officer. Committee members are also trustees of the charity.
The Committee’s main roles are:
- Responsible for the governance of the u3a including, directing how it is managed and run.
- Setting forward goals and managing progress towards them
- Ensuring effective two-way communication between the Committee and all members.
- Trustees are collectively responsible for ensuring that a u3a fulfils its charitable objectives and does not stray beyond them. The main purpose of every u3a is educational.
- Trustees collectively are responsible for the safe custody of the u3a’s money.
